On Being Sick

I didn't manage to miss the usual round of flu that hits a college when students come back together after the summer this year.

My daughter came down with it first, and only had a couple of days of being sick. So when my wife and I started showing symptoms, we figured we'd have a couple of days of feeling bad and that'd be that.

Apparently my daughter's immune system kicks butt. So far we've been sick for about a week, and have only just started feeling better. It'll probably be another week before we're back to 100%.

It's interesting being sick...you feel like you're going to die, even though you know you won't. You can't manage to get motivated to do any of the things you really need to do (after all, if you're going to die, what use is grading papers?)

Getting better is almost as bad as getting sick. You have to make the transition from laying around resting to resuming your normal responsibilities. It's a big stress on your body, since you usually have to do this before you're 100%. So you end up feeling even more exhausted at the end of the day than you did when you were sick.

Maybe I'm still running a fever? Or does anyone else think about things like this?

I really do feel bad that you are sick...but I just really think that you should probably take the next week/month or so off so that you make sure you are completely healed up. The class would really miss you, but we would all understand that your health comes first. Because without your health...what do you have?

I hate being sick too! I never really used to get sick until I came here to Muskingum and lived in the dorms. I agree that getting sick is a pain because as a student, if you miss class you miss assignments and lecture, so when you do start to feel better, you have to make up all the work you missed. Most of the time I would rather be sick then make up a ton of missed work! haha

Being sick is terrible, but I agree with you 100% on that it takes more effort to get back on your feet after being sick. I know that I caught the cold last week and it was even hard to get out of bed. However, everyone deserves a sick day every now and then just to relax for everything going on...

i understand when it comes to the immune system and how sometimes it defends your body from infection and other times it does not. for example, i have had a fevor the last two days, however, i am still going to football practice. even though you feel as though you could die, you never know how sick you are until you attempt to continue your daily routine.

I'm sorry to hear that you were sick. It is always hard to keep the germs away when you have to interact with someone with a cold. I usually don't get sick, maybe and little cold once a year. Lately i just injure myself instead with a broken nose or a sprained foot. I hope you feel better.

I think you were making the transition of getting better. Since I'm a person who gets a common cold just like anyone else, I have came to realize that there are easy steps to prevent people from getting sick. Those include taking vitamin pills that have all the essential vitamins you need for your body. Taking vitamin pills is good especially when you might have a low intake of a food or drink that's really important for your body such as milk and bananas. Milk has calcium and bananas have a lot of potassium. Another way of preventing yourself from getting sick is by using anti-bacterial liquid soap in situations such as before you eat a meal or after you see someone cough or sneeze on a object that you are going to touch. Drinking another person's drink can easily lead to someone getting sick, especially when they are sick.

These are just a few of the many ways that someone can prevent themselves from getting sick. But, when sick, it's recommended to get enough sleep so your body can be relaxed and not overworked.
